“It’s so good if you are lucky enough to get the part, but its who you work with that will make all the difference.”

As an actress from Film and TV and due to my own distinct look I have worked for an array of campaigns from avant garde fashion, lifestyle photography and publicity. As a mature model I have posed for many different fashion magazines such as, Vogue, Vain Magazine, Dreamingless and many many more.

Acting has always been my passion, it has allowed me for over a decade to work as an actress. Having worked in several films and appearing in television series, both in Spain and abroad. I consider myself to be very fortunate to be able to continue to work in a profession I absolutely adore.

As a Master of Ceremonies I have had the great pleasure of performing at many different events. One of my personal favourites and my true forte is to officiate weddings.

JoAni Johnson The Model Rihanna Cast for Fenty

"I consider myself ageless. Whenever I hear terms like "older," I try not to let it register because it takes me away from what I'm doing and the joy of doing it."

Fashion insiders already know about JoAni Johnson: a 67-year-old Black woman who made her runway debut just a few years ago at age 65.

A testament to her magnetism in front of any camera, Johnson's latest fashion credits include walking in Ozwald Boateng's AI-themed show in Harlem, the Manhattan neighborhood she's originally from; starring in Pyer Moss ads; and now, appearing as a mystical muse in Rihanna's campaign for her Fenty Maison LVMH launch.

After appearing alongside Norma Kamali in a viral 2016 video dispelling beauty myths about aging gracefully, Johnson went on to walk runways for Eileen Fisher, Tome, Deveaux, and CDLM by Chris Peters. Her life until then had involved working as a receptionist and accountant, gigs with fashion executives affiliated with brands like Calvin Klein and Fiorucci, being a stay-at-home mom, and currently, her work off-the-runway as a certified tea-blender.
Johnson's career as a tea-blender requires her to give presentations on the history of tea, tea drinking trends, and more. For work, she travels internationally to lend her authoritative, poised voice to the community. Soon, the world will also know Johnson as a fashion star in her own right — a born and bred New Yorker, who stands at 5'4" and defies industry norms by simply being herself.

"Being Black and not of a certain height, in modeling terms, didn't give me a chance to get in the industry," Johnson says. "Now this is my time."

PAPER caught up with the booked and busy Johnson to talk about working with Rihanna and creating more diverse seats at fashion's table.

I began my modeling career when I was 15 years old in Pretoria and Johannesburg. While I worked at modeling, I completed a BS degree in dietetics, had 3 children, then added a Master of Science degree while running a modeling school in the evenings. I worked diligently at my education, never imagining my modeling career would span more than 50 years.
After moving to Toronto at 42, I continued modeling, represented by the Elite Modeling Agency. I then obtained my second MS degree, in Nutritional Sciences, from the University of Toronto, and made time to rewrite the exams to register as a dietitian in Canada and the US. These qualifications and enthusiasm for good health sent me around the world on speaking engagements. My health tips are on www.mayemusk.com. Yes, I love being a busy lady!
By 50 I had moved to New York and my career took on an exciting new energy with major campaigns.
To celebrate my 60th birthday I stopped coloring my hair, cut it short and let my natural silver color shine. The new look brought a major campaign for Virgin America and Joe Fresh, billboards in Times Square, covers of Elle Quebec, New York Magazine, L'Officiel Azerbaijan and Zoomer Magazine, music videos and commercials, and recently the "It Girl" in Vanity Fair.
I love traveling for speaking engagements and modeling jobs. IMG Models represents me worldwide, so my passport and suitcase are always ready.
To increase good health in children, I serve on the LA Board of The Kitchen Community, building vegetable gardens in underserved schools around the country.
I love to say, "At 69, I am only just beginning!"
